A different early socialist, Robert Owen, was himself an industrialist. Owen first captivated notice by working textile mills in New Lanark, Scot., which were the two really financially rewarding and, by the specifications with the day, remarkably humane: no small children beneath age ten were being employed. Owen’s fundamental belief was that hu
